43 COLUMNS
Azkuna Zentroa - Alhóndiga Bilbao arose from a fact and a need: the fact of having a large building in disuse in the center of the city and the need to create a contemporary cultural space, with Philippe Starck and Lorenzo Baraldi as protagonists.
Philippe, an industrial designer, turned the pillars of the cultural centre into a cinematic stage through space and time, with the column as the protagonist, while Baraldi, an Italian set designer, was in charge of the staging of this tour. Once the concept was defined, he used the workshops and the skilled craftsmen for the development of each column's surface.
Likewise, the publication is based on the creative process of the 43 columns of the Atrium of Cultures of Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, focusing on their design, materials, craftsmanship and placement.
